So the problem with Neoplatonism is that the God part of it doesn’t really seem that objective because it’s actually based on their sort of spiritual system of remaining, returning and proceeding, which sort of has to do with like the joint soul of everyone that the universe doing like descending into matter, then ascending out of matter, I guess, or just staying put. It’s hard to explain what staying put means. I think it means that the levels still exist regardless of what’s happening. Everything isn’t exactly literal. It more means like you sort of turn into the thing above you and proceeding, I guess, means the thing above you informs the thing below it. But this is not an objective thing. And even if it was objective, they spiritualized it in a way that seems suspiciously culture bound, I guess because they believe in souls, but then they associate certain emotions with certain things happening with the soul that’s suspiciously subjective because very easy to attempt to do a Dionysus and then you do it wrong and then someone said you actually did a Titan. Basically, basically, you say, I’m ascending man and then you neglect your life and then you neglect your life and they say you’re actually doing something Titanic. So this is like the problem with the spiritual philosophies that they try to combine the spiritual part with like the objective part. So like you think if there’s like a real God in Platonic philosophy, the real God is actually a form. I think this might be true in at least some versions of the philosophy, but by the time you get to late antique Neoplatonism, it doesn’t seem so much like the gods are forms as that they’re actually operating in the motivations. Like Hekate is the vivifying force or something that exists in between the stuff. Hermes is translating stuff. Hermes is translating stuff. They’re basically operations. But operations bound to a very specific system. So the time you get to the Hanads, which are the gods, they’re not really so objective anymore. It’s ironic because the objective looking stuff I think is located in the Naos and then this objective stuff is actually located above it. What? This is very ironic. This is very ironic. ironic if subjectivities are actually located above objectivities.
